Carl T. “Terry” Layne, 78, of Manito and formerly of Rushville, passed away unexpectedly at 2:22 pm on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Carle Health Center in Pekin.
He was born on January 15, 1946, in Haley, Tennessee, the son of the late Carl “Pete” Hampton & Nona Bell (Lewis) Layne. Terry graduated from Rushville High School with the Class of 1964. He married Sharon Trone on April 3, 1965 in Rushville. Terry later married Pat Tomlinson on July 10, 1986, in Camdenton, Missouri and she survives. Terry worked for the majority of his career as an electrician with Bohn Heat Transfer in Beardstown and later for Indian Refining in Lawrenceville and Pekin Energy, retiring in 2012.
Terry was a musician in the band Midnight Blue and enjoyed an eclectic mix of music including, country, rock & roll and gospel. He was fond of his 12 string Takamine guitar. Terry liked to be outdoors and enjoyed camping and fishing. Many saw Terry as a “jack of all trades” as he could fix just about anything that he set out to repair. He was a charter member of the Rushville Church of the Nazarene. In his earlier years, he coached little league sports and was a boy scout leader. Terry was also an avid knife collector. Above all, he enjoyed the time that he spent with his family. He loved to spend time with them all, especially with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 37 years, Pat, Terry is survived by a son; Kevin (Danielle) Layne of Springfield, a daughter; Lisa (Randall) Thoron of Girard, step children; Kent (Debbie) Allen of Jacksonville and Kelley (Roger) Dunning of Petersburg, Indiana, twelve grandchildren, several great grandchildren, four brothers; Wayne (Donna) Layne of Peoria, Mark (Rhonda) Layne of Rushville, Phil (Jill) Layne of Rushville & Paul (Martha) Layne of Rushville, a sister; Patti (Dennis) Kette of Rushville and by many nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service honoring Terry’s life will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at the Triplett & Wood Funeral Home of Rushville. Bro. Matt Haberman will officiate. Inurnment will follow at the Palm Cemetery in rural Rushville. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until the time of services at the funeral home on Saturday. A luncheon will be served at the Rushville Church of the Nazarene following the services. Memorial contributions in memory of Terry are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
