GOLDEN, Ill. -- Emma Pauline Flesner, 93, of Golden died Monday (Jan. 13, 2014) in the Golden Good Shepherd Home in Golden.

Miss Flesner was born on Nov. 24, 1920, in Tioga. She was the daughter of the late Eilert and Ida Huls Flesner.

Miss Flesner graduated from LaPrairie Community High School as valedictorian in 1938. She attended Western Illinois State Teacher's College in Macomb. She studied advanced and specialized accounting at Golden Gate College in San Francisco. She finished graduate work at San Francisco State College, where she studied specialized, real estate and federal tax accounting. She also studied additional subjects pertaining to teaching, etc., at the University of California in San Francisco and the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

She held teaching certificates in Illinois, California, Iowa and Missouri. While in San Francisco, she owned and operated a public accounting office for several years. She worked in various capacities as an accountant or a school teacher throughout the United States from coast to coast. She retired from the St. Louis public school system and remained in St. Louis until 2006, when she became a resident of the Golden Good Shepherd Home.

Miss Flesner was an intellectual who was always furthering her education, upholding her philosophy which was that "Life is a continuing education." She enjoyed working with young children and strived to make learning a fun experience for them. She was listed in the 1958 edition of "Who Is Who" in California. She enjoyed interior decorating, liked to garden and was an excellent seamstress.

Surviving are two sisters, Evelyn Hughes of Quincy and Eunice Guilmino of San Antonio, Texas, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four siblings, Louise Turner, Lois Muder, Norma Hobbs and Waldo Flesner.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Hunter Funeral Home in Golden, with the Rev. Linda Murray officiating. Entombment will be in the Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum in Quincy.

VISITATION: 10 a.m. until the time of services on Wednesday in the Hunter Funeral Home in Golden.

MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions have been suggested to Golden Good Shepherd Home or Immanuel Lutheran Church.
