George was born March 27, 1922, on the family farm in Bowen. He was the son of the late Fred and Johannah (Osterman) Gerdes. He married Edna M. Goldenstein on Oct. 27, 1946, in Golden. Edna passed away May 24, 2013.
George served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Golden and the Golden American Legion Post No. 801. He was a former Hancock County tax assessor and past president of the Hancock County Fair Board.
Surviving are three daughters, Wanda (Ron) Hirschauer of Fowler, Inez Totsch of Quincy, Linda (Jim) Lewis of Quincy, four grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, David Totsch.
SERVICES: 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Golden, with the Rev. Tony Metz officiating. He will be laid to rest in Golden Memorial Gardens in Golden with military honors by the Golden American Legion Post No. 801.
VISITATION: Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
