Hubert Roberson

d. October 3, 2013

MENDON, Ill. -- On Oct. 3, 2013, at 2:35 a.m. in Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Hubert Glenn Roberson fell asleep in Christ, and is in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Hubert was the youngest of 10 children, born on Sept. 29, 1925, in Granite City to the late Walter Wellington and Juanita "Nettie" Branum Roberson. Hubert married Dorothy Hollis on July 25, 1925. To this union were born two daughters, Elaine Hartley (Roy) of Columbia, Mo., and Judy Thum of Tucson, Ariz. Dorothy passed away in 1985. He later married Mary Hook in September 1985. He has one stepdaughter, Michelle Hook Hainline. Mary, of Mendon, survives.

Hubert graduated from high school in Rolla, Mo. He joined the Navy in 1941. After basic training, he received a rating of 3rd class Signalman Petty Officer. Hubert was assigned to the USS Jack Welkey DE800, an escort destroyer. After the war, Hubert graduated from Central Bible Institute and Seminary in 1952 in Springfield, Mo. He graduated from Columbia College, Columbia, Mo., in May 1974 with a bachelor of arts in individual studies. He also attended Eden Seminary in Webster Groves, Mo. Hubert pastored several churches in the Missouri East Conference of the United Methodist Church. He retired in 1992, but did not really retire. He was pastor at several churches in Illinois, his last appointment being chaplain of Sunset Home in Quincy. Hubert's family and friends will miss those perpetually twinkling eyes, as he so readily saw the lighter side of life, but we have the assurance that we will see him again. "This mortal must put on immortality, death is swallowed up in victory" (1Cor.15).

Also surviving are three grandsons, Eddie Joe (Malissa) Thum, Gabriel Thum and Michael Thum; seven great-grandchildren, Luciana Thum, Giuseppe Thum, Wriley Thum, Eijah Thum, Maxwell Thum, Nathaniel Thum and Maya Hartley Gersh; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Clark, Victor, Edwin, Leslie and Theodore Roberson; four sisters, Mary Rose, Virginia, Ruth and Naomi; one granddaughter, Heather Hartley Gersh; and one son-in-law, Roy Ed Thum.
