Irwin was born Oct. 2, 1923, in Brown County, to the late Bohle and Sadie (Gerdes) Ideus. He married Ruth Reuschel on June 5, 1946, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Golden. Ruth survives in Golden.
Irwin was drafted into the U.S. Air Force in 1944 and completed his basic training at Shepherd Air Force Base in Texas, then was reassigned to Scott Air Force Base, near St. Louis.
He was a lifelong active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Golden and a charter member of Arrowhead Golf Course in Camp Point.
He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and follower of all Illini sports, passing his love of sports to all four daughters and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling with family. He obtained his private pilot license and was proud to take part in the Great River Honor Flight in the spring of 2012.
Surviving are four daughters, Jeanne (Jeff) Romer of Floyds Knob, Ind., Marsha (Bob) Cooper of Marshall, Mo., Sandra (Greg) Vail of Bloomington and Carolyn (Tom) Weiland of Heyworth; five grandchildren, Ryan (Allison) Severns of Lincolnton, N.C., Katy (Jordan) Schwartz of Commerce Township, Mich., Rose Vail of Bloomington, Seth Weiland of Champaign and Jake Vail of Palatine; three great-grandchildren, Drayton and Cormac Severns of Lincolnton and Ashton Schwartz of Commerce Township; one sister, Rose (Bill) Cassens of Golden; and one brother, Jerry (Sharon) Ideus of Carthage.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Geneva Gronewold and Velma Chapman and one brother, Vernon Ideus.
SERVICES: 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Golden, with the Rev. Brad Eidson conducting. Interment will be in Golden Memorial Gardens.
VISITATION: 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, in the Hunter Funeral Home, Golden.
