John R. Carey, 92, of Rushville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2023, at the Beardstown Health and Rehab Center. He was born on May 11, 1931, at home in Cass County Illinois, a son of Reed and Maude Mae (White) Carey. John married Thelma Ann Cox on March 4, 1953, in New London, Missouri. She preceded him in death on May 19, 2007.
He is survived by his four children, Lynn (Sue) Carey, Mike (Nita) Carey, Kathy (Bill) Eckroy, and Debbie (Steve) Fuqua, all of Rushville, Illinois, daughter-in-law, Karen Carey, seventeen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, brother, Melvin Robert (Doris) Carey of Rushville, Illinois, sisters, Mary (Dave) Peterson of Avon, Illinois, and Patty (Roger) Wellenkamp of Beardstown. Numerous nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, Randy Carey, granddaughter, Mindy Koch, sisters, Alma Allison and Iva Brown, and brother James Carey.
John served his country during the Korean Conflict from 1953 – 1955 in the United States Army. He was a licensed timber buyer at Beardstown Hardwood for over 25 years. He owned and operated Carey’s Portable Welding. He farmed and welded for over 50 years, retiring in 2010. John was a member of Moose Lodge 506. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing. He was an avid coin and gun collector. John could “fix anything but a broken heart.”
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at the Triplett & Wood Funeral Home. Comforting words by David Haney. Interment in the Rushville City Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.
