Mary Hughes

Mary C. Hughes, 82, of Rushville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family members, at 9:45 pm on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice in Peoria.

She was born on January 12, 1942, in Schuyler County, the daughter of the late Horatio & Lucille (Watson) Hughes. Mary graduated from Rushville High School in 1960. She served as a secretary for most of her working life, working for Ronald Kanoski, The Grand Lodge AF & AM in Springfield, Franklin Life Insurance and lastly with Western Illinois University and their music department retiring in 2012.

Mary was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Rushville and was a board member of the Rushville Public Library. She enjoyed her independence and liked to do things on her own. Some of her hobbies included gardening and flowers. In her earlier years she was part of a women’s bowling league. 

She is survived by five nephews, ten nieces, several great nieces & nephews and also by many great-great nieces & nephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by four brothers, Buford, George, Douglas & Charles Hughes, two sisters; Elizabeth Serrot & Sadie Mendenhall and by two nieces and a nephew. 

Funeral services honoring Mary’s life will be conducted at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at the Triplett & Wood Funeral Home of Rushville. Pastor Stacy Tomich will officiate. Interment will follow at the Rushville City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of services at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in memory of Mary are suggested to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to the Rushville Public Library.
