URSA, Ill. -- Opal Lucille Shanks, 85, of Ursa, passed away Friday (March 6, 2015) at Blessing Hospital, Quincy.

Opal was born Sept. 8, 1929, in Loraine, to the late Glenn Edward and Grace Goldie (Jenkins) Sloninger. She married Gene Francis Shanks on April 17, 1948, in Union United Methodist Church, Quincy. Gene passed away Feb. 16, 1996.

Opal was a 1947 graduate of Mendon Township High School. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Ursa, and a member of the Bear Creek American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are two children, Lois (John) Begeman of Quincy and Linda (Michael) Walton of Bloomington; one daughter-in-law, Betty Shanks of Palmyra, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Brad (Kelle) Begeman of Mendon, Leigh Anne (Kevin) Adkins of Danville, Kristen (Skip ) Weikle of Forsyth, Kelley (Tony) Hummel of Quincy, Chad Walton of Maryland, Mary Beth Shanks of Palmyra and Joseph (Jessica) Shanks of Palmyra; 13 great-grandchildren, Breanne and Brennan Begeman of Mendon, Parker, Reis and Nelson Kendrick of Forsyth, Sarah, Joe and Stephen Weikle of Forsyth, Bryer and Bella Hummel of Quincy, Christopher and Katie Adkins of Danville and Clarence Ray Buchanan III of Hannibal, Mo.

She was preceded in death by one son, Paul Shanks.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, at the Hunter Funeral Home, Mendon, with the Rev. Keela Neumann conducting. Interment will be in New Loraine Cemetery, Loraine.

VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Monday, March 9, at the funeral home.

MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, Zion United Church of Christ or the donor's choice.
