Shirley Cockerill Phillips, 81, of Rushville, passed away at 1:40 AM, Friday, July 20, 2018, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
She was born on October 22, 1936, in Scott County, Illinois, the daughter of Perry and Hazel (Floyd) Six. She married Dale Cockerill on June 4, 1954 in Jacksonville. He preceded her in death on September 18, 1977. She later married Robert E. “Bob” Phillips on March 9, 1979, in Rushville and he survives.
Also surviving are her three children Terry (Linda) Cockerill of Jacksonville, Kimberly (David Randall) Hill of Arenzville, Keli (Mark) Schoonover of Rushville, three step daughters Cindy (Rick) Sloan and Sherri Phillips all of Wiggins, Mississippi, and Terri (Tom) Kerr of Rushville, 17 grandchildren Reese and Case Sloan, Tiffany (Andy) Maxwell, Brock (Jamie) Simmert, Kristi (Jonathan) Griffith, Allison (John) Kennedy, Ashley (Rob) Saunders, Madilyn Phillips, Misty (Denny) Wear, Dusty (Jeff) Turner, Brennan (Betsy) Caputo, Teea (J.T. Thoenen) Schoonover, Coby (Jessica) McIntyre, Daniel (Jillian) Hill, Nicole (Troy Hughes) Shepherd, Angy (Brian) Hardy, Andy (Amy) Kerr, 21 great grandchildren Caden and Eliana Simmert, Ella Bulger, Owen Griffith, Madison and Mason Wear, Paisley and Gracie Turner, Cole and Hannah Shepherd, Alexis Hardy, Dilynn Eifert, Paxton Kerr, Hunter and Timber Hill, Margaret Grace Maxwell, Charlie Caputo, Matt Keisel, Oliver and Caiden McIntyre, Keaton Saunders, sister Norma (Mike) Koyne of Jacksonville and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, infant twin son Gary Cockerill, brother Leroy Six, seven sisters Laura Steinmann, Dorothy Oris, Virginia Hocking, Pauline Cumby, Violet Neece, Esther Barfield and an infant sister.
Shirley was a 1954 graduate of Bluffs High School. She first worked at Farmers State Bank and later at JC Penney both in Jacksonville. She later worked for Schuy-Labs, the What’zit Shop, Feigls Grocery Store and Peabody Coal in Rushville. She owned and operated, with her husband Bob, Pot Pourri Flowers in Rushville from 1979 until retiring in 1994. .
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rushville. She was a volunteer with the HELP Center in Rushville. She was talented and artistic. Shirley’s world revolved around her family and she relished the time spent with them.
Services will be at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville, with David Haney officiating. Private interment will be in the Green Cemetery, near Bluffs at a later date. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or the Liver Foundation at the Mayo Clinic.
